Telling in pictures the lives of children under the Occupation is unprecedented. One must trace the stories of these destinies, the most terrible as well as the most ordinary. All the children have in common that they continued to play marbles or with dolls, to enjoy Punch and Judy shows or to build dens in the forest — sometimes even in the internment camps where Jewish children were penned up before being deported.

But to be 10 years old in 1940 also meant being forced to leave home during the exodus, to go into hiding if you were Jewish, to be exposed to hunger and cold, shaken by separations, bereavements, the absence of a father or brother — prisoners of war or taken away for the STO. So many buried memories, restored here through rediscovered letters, school essays, class photographs and family albums, drawings, testimonies, and toys preserved in attics.

For while children were subjected to History, they also took part in it in their own way, at their own level. One never forgets one's childhood; it marks you forever. A magnificent album for understanding and discovering the daily lives of the children of the war.
