Yet Supermarine and the RAF were already preparing its successor, and new variants were under study to preserve the fighter's edge over the enemy. After the Mark VI, VII and VIII, produced in limited numbers, it was above all the Mk IX — rushed into service in the summer of 1942 — that would become the best-known Spitfire. Built through to the end of the conflict and deployed on every front, this aircraft became the RAF's standard fighter and was widely exported, particularly after the end of hostilities. The last Spitfire variant fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Mark XVI, was in fact a Mk.IX powered by a Packard-built engine produced in the United States. Entering service in 1944, this variant introduced the bubble canopy to the Spitfire for the first time and was operated by the RAF well into the 1950s, replacing the Mk IX while front-line squadrons awaited the arrival of the first jets.
