After a relatively convincing debut in Poland in September 1939, the Zerstörer ("destroyer") units — despite being composed of the cream of German fighter aviation — experienced a rapid decline punctuated by heavy losses, such that by the end of the Battle of Britain, barely a year after its introduction into service, it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110 from front-line duty and cease its production. Following the failure of the Me 210, its designated successor, the Bf 110 enjoyed a second career in a role for which it had not been designed: night fighting. And it must be said that this second career proved infinitely more glorious for the Zerstörer. Indeed, in this new role the twin-engine aircraft — whose production was maintained until the end of the conflict — proved a formidable adversary for Allied aircraft, achieving more victories not only than the other night fighters of the Luftwaffe, but also than all aircraft of this type from every air force engaged in the Second World War… Format 200x240 mm 80 pages
