It was in 1950, at the outbreak of the Korean War, that the West first encountered the MiG-15, the first jet fighter built in large series in the Soviet Union. This small, fast, and heavily armed aircraft quickly proved to be a formidable adversary for United Nations forces, as it was superior to every fighter they could field against it — a situation that persisted until the arrival of the most advanced variants of the famous F-86 Sabre, which finally restored air superiority to the United States. Even as the "Fagot" — the official NATO designation for the MiG-15 — was barely entering service, MiG designed its successor: a higher-performance aircraft with a modified wing, the MiG-17 ("Fresco"). While the MiG-17 was withdrawn from Soviet service in the late 1960s, it enjoyed considerable success abroad, the "Fresco" becoming the most widely exported Soviet fighter until the arrival of its indirect successor, the MiG-21.
