The MiG-21 originated from an official requirement issued by Soviet authorities in 1954 for a high-performance frontline light fighter intended to protect factories and military installations against potential American raids. Produced for nearly half a century in some twenty major variants across four successive generations, the "Fishbed" — the NATO reporting name assigned to it — is not only the most widely manufactured jet in the entire history of aviation, but also the most produced aircraft since the end of the Second World War, across all types and nations combined. Operated by some fifty air forces on four of the five continents, the MiG-21 has taken part in most of the conflicts of the past four decades, from the Six-Day War in 1967 to the Balkans conflicts of 1999. At present, more than a thousand examples of this fighter — a large proportion of them built under licence in China (Shenyang F-7 and J-7) — remain in service, their careers by no means at an end, thanks to modernisation programmes for surviving airframes that have already allowed the type to sail comfortably past the threshold of the 21st century. 200×240 mm — 96 pages
