Shortly after entering service with the US Navy in 1960, the US Air Force in turn took an interest in the F4H-1 Phantom II, and it was in May 1963 that the first F-4C of the USAF — broadly identical to the US Navy aircraft — made its maiden flight and exceeded Mach 2 on that occasion.

Over nearly a decade, several versions and variants of the twin-engine aircraft appeared, each time benefiting from improvements in avionics, powerplant or armament. Beyond the USAF and the various units of the Air National Guard and the US Reserve, which operated the 2,600 F-4s delivered to them through to the mid-1990s — notably for reconnaissance and electronic warfare — the Phantom II also enjoyed considerable export success, with more than 1,200 examples operated by some ten countries, notably within NATO; some of these, such as Japan, even manufactured it under licence in significant numbers, and many, such as Israel or Iran, used it in combat, often with success.
