Developed in response to an official 1953 programme to provide the Armée de l'Air with a light supersonic interceptor, the Mirage III is, by general consensus, one of the finest achievements of the French post-war aeronautical industry. This delta-wing fighter — a configuration that has since become the hallmark of the Dassault aircraft manufacturer — rapidly demonstrated its qualities beyond its original borders, to the point where 1,400 examples, across all variants, rolled off the production lines, purchased by some twenty nations. This very broad subject has been deliberately divided into two separate parts. This second volume covers the "improved" variants of the fighter, with a lengthened fuselage, powered by an Atar 9C and equipped with a more capable Doppler radar: the IIIE interceptor, the IIIR and RD reconnaissance variants, and the 5 and 50 ground-attack versions — only the aircraft operated by the Armée de l'Air being taken into account each time, in keeping with the editorial policy of this series.
