It was quickly adopted by an impressive number of air forces around the world, which explains why some examples remain in service to this day. The US Navy and USMC, the originators of the project, operated the aircraft in four of its main variants (F-4B, J, N and S), to which are added the specialised reconnaissance variants (RF-4). The genesis of the Phantom II dates back to the summer of 1953, when McDonnell, on its own initiative, tasked one of its engineering teams, led by Herman D. Barkley, with modernising one of its previous designs, the F3H Demon, a single-seat, single-engine aircraft appreciated by its pilots for its handling qualities but underpowered and with too limited a range. On 3 July 1959, the F4H-1 was officially named Phantom II, a name given in tribute to the McDonnell FH-1, which had been the first American jet aircraft conceived from the outset, in 1943, for carrier operations. 84 pages, approximately 220 profiles
