Although its retirement was at one point announced for 2005, the C-160 Transall remains today the workhorse of French military air transport. More than forty years after entering service, this twin-engine tactical transport aircraft is present across all theatres of operations where the French Army deploys, not to mention the numerous humanitarian operations that have taken it to the four corners of the globe. Handled with consummate skill by its crews, the Transall still acquits itself admirably when called upon to eat dust and flex its muscles on the most improbable airstrips. But for how much longer? "Time takes pleasure in affronting the finest things," as the poet says, and one cannot indefinitely conceal the difficulties and potential dangers of operating in combat — despite all its qualities — an ageing and worn-out aircraft.
