From the late nineteenth century onwards, in Grenoble and its surroundings, lingerie companies flourished. Valisère, LOU and Playtex employed a skilled female workforce and innovated in the production of girdles, bras and knickers… A history of industry, fashion and women in the twentieth century.

While the precise moment when women first wore knickers may be unknown, generations of women put together a trousseau containing their undergarments and an essential part of their intimate lives. The industrialisation of clothing and new patterns of consumption, however, brought an end to these traditional practices, and it was thus that the epic of French lingerie began. In Isère, Valisère, LOU, Lora, Playtex and Wonderbra developed throughout the twentieth century to achieve remarkable growth.


Drawing on the expertise of a skilled female workforce, these pioneering companies wrote themselves into the history of fashion by creating, for hundreds of thousands of women, slips, girdles, bras and other celebrated undergarments. Now written in other lands, this industrial history is also the history of women.

Through fashion, advertising and consumption, but also beauty, modesty and sexual morality, lingerie has much to say about women's place in society throughout the twentieth century.
