In 1945, the French army, faced with the necessity of rebuilding an identity battered by the war, chose to equip itself with a new, young and dynamic arm, embodied by the metropolitan airborne troops. It was in this context that in July 1946 the Directorate of Colonial Troops, keen to have an equivalent instrument at its disposal, decided to form a battalion of colonial infantry paratroopers. Its backbone was built around a nucleus of veterans from the Ponchardier commando in the Far East; the unit would embark for Indochina in 1947, where it would take on the definitive designation of the 2nd Battalion of Colonial Parachute Commandos. Over two years of relentless fighting, those soon to be nicknamed the "Red Berets" would battle in South Vietnam against an implacable adversary, embodied by the communist guerrilla forces of the Viet Minh. It is the story of these exceptional men — from whom today's paratroopers of the 2nd RPIMa are descended — that we propose to bring to light here, through a near-exhaustive work enriched with an iconography as rich as it is previously unpublished.
