On 19 June 1940, the German army entered Lyon. Yet on the Alpine crests, the fortress troops — infantry, artillerymen and sappers, far inferior in number but solidly entrenched in the works of the Alpine Maginot Line and supported by formidably effective artillery — paralysed two Italian armies. This fifth and final volume details with extraordinary precision the organization of the defensive and fortified sectors of the Rhône, Savoy, Dauphiné and Alpes-Maritimes on the first day of the war against Italy, then the defensive battles these men brilliantly conducted in the days that followed, even after the armistice call. In order to be comprehensive on the subject of French fortification in the 1930s, the work devotes considerable space to the defence of Corsica and the famous Mareth Line in Tunisia. The saga concludes with the astonishing secret life of the works in the shadow of NATO during the 1950s, through to the final dismantlement.
