Continuing in this approach — that is, treating both equipment and men with an equal concern for exhaustiveness — this long-awaited Volume 2 is organized in two parts: the first 150 pages constitute an extraordinarily detailed and reasoned catalogue of the technical forms of North-East fortification: works and casemates, armour of all types, armoured observation and firing bells, retractable turrets, artillery pieces and light collective weapons under concrete, interval artillery, railways supplying the works and running through underground galleries, command posts, shelters, underground factories and power plants, communications equipment, etc., enriched with 260 period photographs or more recently taken in the field. Such a compilation constitutes the most complete technical dossier ever published on this fascinating subject.
The men operating all this equipment are, above all, artillerymen, traditionally grouped under the name of "learned arms." The second part of this volume therefore reviews, in the greatest detail regarding their uniforms and badges, the mobile fortress artillery regiments (RARF) and the artillery position regiments (RAP) providing the gunners serving under concrete and the batteries positioned on the intervals.
Around 150 period photographs of troops and nearly 70 badges illustrate this second part. Finally, the fortress engineer sappers, drawing on their many specialities (mining sappers, electromechanical engineers, railway sappers, signals personnel, etc.), bring this richly detailed volume to a close.
