Before the war, the young Ministry of Air chose Carpiquet, close to Caen, to establish an aerodrome dedicated to the training of bomber crews and air gunners, far from any future front. In June 1940, the Germans moved in and turned it into a major base engaged in the Battle of Britain.

In 1942, it faced the Dieppe Raid and sheltered fighter-bomber units. It endured numerous raids and bombing attacks. In June and July 1944, it became the cornerstone of the Battle of Caen. The Hitlerjugend mounted fierce resistance against the Canadians there.

Rebuilt after the war, it resumed its initial role by training hundreds of aircrew engaged in the Algerian conflict, then passed under Army control before becoming entirely civilian in 2010.

Exceptional documentation, with a great many previously unpublished photographs on the turbulent destiny of an aerodrome and a base that found themselves at the heart of History and of many vicissitudes.
