G.I. Joe - Ernie Pyle
A celebrated reporter, Ernie Pyle became a war correspondent when the Second World War broke out and set off alongside the American Army (Company of the 18th Infantry Regiment). Following it through its victories as well as its defeats, he first covered events in North Africa and went as far as the heart of Italy at the Battle of Monte Cassino, then travelled to England before landing in France (Battle of Normandy, liberation of Paris); he subsequently departed for the Pacific Front, where he was killed by Japanese gunfire on the island of Okinawa on 18 April 1945.
Written in the heat of battle, this book is an unparalleled document. Focusing attention on the men behind the soldiers, Pyle's dispatches became immensely popular, followed in some 300 newspapers. Upon its publication in 1944, the volume collecting them was printed in hundreds of thousands of copies; it was subsequently adapted as a comic strip and brought to the screen by William Wellman as early as 1945, featuring notably Burt Lancaster and Burgess Meredith.
