A gifted child from a poor family, Bill Mauldin (1921–2003) enlisted in 1940 and became the cartoonist for the great Army daily Stars and Stripes. Sent to the European front, he was the first to describe the real living conditions of the GIs.

The voice of the dogfaces, their miseries and their grievances, Mauldin revealed to America the other side of the story, the hidden face of the US Army: the major scandals and petty schemes that drove front-line soldiers to fury. This talent for speaking uncomfortable truths earned him extraordinary run-ins with certain senior officers, foremost among them George Patton himself.

Against the grain of propaganda and with sharp humour, UP FRONT is a caustic, unclassifiable, captivating book. It earned its author the Pulitzer Prize 1945 and made him, at 23, rich and famous.

Bill Mauldin continued to draw until 1991 and received a second Pulitzer Prize in 1959. He is today considered one of the masters of editorial cartooning in the United States.
