The story of the CSS Alabama and her captain, Raphael Semmes, is unique in naval history. This frigate, built in Liverpool for the Confederate Navy and which never had a home port, waged a two-year commerce-raiding campaign against the merchant marine of the United States.

Raphael Semmes succeeded in almost entirely disrupting Yankee commercial traffic: he sank 67 vessels, appearing where no one expected him and vanishing just as swiftly. The ships of the Union Navy, which hunted him across every sea on the globe, never caught him.

At the head of a crew of English mercenaries drawn from the Liverpool underworld, he managed to wage a merciless war without a single drop of blood being shed.

The CSS Alabama fought her final engagement off Cherbourg on 19 June 1864. She was sunk by the USS Kearsarge, but Raphael Semmes managed to escape capture in an extraordinary fashion.
