«The only photographer for miles around, I now had my own personal war.»

Having landed at Omaha Beach on 12 August 1944, Lee Miller arrived in Saint-Malo the following day. Assigned to cover Civil Affairs, she found the city under siege. Armed with her Rolleiflex and a 1939 tourist board map of the city, she was the only photojournalist to cover the fierce fighting that would lead to the liberation of Saint-Malo.

She photographed refugees, came to the aid of civilians, entered the devastated old town and witnessed the final assault on the citadel of Alet, its napalm bombing and the German surrender.

Her report — text and photographs — was at the time partially banned from publication in Vogue magazine, yet constitutes an exceptional testament.
