Through previously unpublished photographs, this illustrated essay sheds light on a little-known episode of the Second World War. Lorient, Saint-Nazaire, La Rochelle, Royan, the Pointe de Grave, Dunkirk. While Allied troops, having landed in Normandy, pushed eastward, these Atlantic and North Sea ports remained occupied by the Germans. Determined to fight to the last man, the enemy trapped more than 210,000 civilians. This marked the beginning of eight months of siege for the Allied troops and the FFI, eight months of additional occupation imposed upon the local populations, before the surrenders of April and May 1945. Through photographs taken by French and German war correspondents, Stéphane Simonnet recounts, at human scale, the painful, dramatic, and at times heroic history of the Atlantic pockets.
