With its graceful silhouette and piercing whistle, the Gazelle is a helicopter whose sight has become familiar since its first flight more than fifty-five years ago.

Designed as a simple observation aircraft, it was employed far beyond that single role, becoming a genuine combat helicopter in many of the armed forces that acquired it. In the Falklands, the Middle East, the Balkans and Africa, the Gazelle took part in the majority of conflicts over the past four decades.

Today, the Gazelle's front-line career is drawing to a close with its military operators, and it is becoming a highly sought-after collector's aircraft: now is therefore the time to trace its history.

This work tells the story of the Gazelle — from the first design sketches to the end of series production — and the technical advances it introduced into the world of rotary-wing aviation (in particular the famous shrouded tail rotor known as the "fenestron"). It provides a detailed description of the aircraft before surveying, as comprehensively as possible, every country that operated it within their armed forces or state services, while also covering the civil career of this now-iconic aircraft.
