This previously unpublished volume brings together nearly one hundred paintings by Wehrmacht war artists.

Most of them members of a specialised unit established on Hitler's orders, the artists sent to the front were tasked with bearing witness to the fighting.

The works they produced, far removed from any form of propaganda, bear witness to the tragedy of a war whose violence is expressed through disillusioned faces, combat scenes of terrifying authenticity, and ravaged landscapes. The styles adopted are highly varied, ranging from academicism to expressionism, with a constant concern to capture the evolution of a conflict moving inexorably towards catastrophe.
