Heinz Knoke enlisted in the Luftwaffe in 1939, driven by passion, a taste for adventure and a sense of duty.

After a brief training period, he joined the day-fighter arm and flew the Messerschmitt Bf 109. He took part in the Battle of Britain, where he faced Spitfires, then in the war against the USSR, initially with great success. He escorted convoys in the North Sea — unglamorous work, carried out with professionalism.

From early 1943 onwards, he and his squadron had to contend with raids by B-17s and B-24s. He then took part in developing new combat techniques, including bombing enemy formations and firing rockets. At the controls of his "Gustav," Knoke would strive to slow the inevitable.

A day-by-day account that precisely describes the violence of aerial combat as experienced by a Luftwaffe ace.
