After a hesitant start, Edmond Thieffry proved to be a formidable fighter pilot during the First World War, amassing ten victories before being cut short by a forced landing behind enemy lines. He was held prisoner in Germany until the end of 1918, despite numerous escape attempts.

Very attached to his family and friends, he wrote several thousand letters throughout his life on the evolution of his situation. This correspondence was preserved by his descendants.

The thorough examination of all this correspondence allowed the author to reconstruct the atmosphere of the Yser front, the fighter's tenacity, and his relationships with other aces. Extremely rare documents have come down to us, such as a long account that crossed customs hidden in the handle of a tennis racket…

The character of the hero is revealed through the reading of the documents.
