Under the rules of war, these incredibly courageous men were not permitted to carry all weapons into combat. Nevertheless, they were greatly appreciated and respected by the various units they served. Allied chaplains suffered the second highest casualty rate of any group in the Second World War (just after RAF Bomber Command) and were virtually irreplaceable owing to the academic and religious requirements that often took years to fulfil.
This book examines the Allied chaplains in the Battle of Normandy, including what is known of their lives before military service, their deaths, and details of their acts of heroism. Their remains rest either in the cemeteries of Normandy or, for some American chaplains, in the United States.
