The Thirty Years' War is a subject curiously little studied in France. This era was largely dominated by the personality and work of Richelieu, who joined the king's council in April 1624. It was the Cardinal's action that enabled Louis XIII to field an army that would emerge transformed from the Thirty Years' War. Commanded by great captains such as the Duke of Rohan, Viscount Turenne and the Prince of Condé, it would perform wonders. Avins and the Valtellina in 1635, Tornavento in 1636, Leucate in 1637, la Rota in 1639, Casal and Turin in 1640, Wolfenbüttel in 1641, Kempen and Lerida in 1642, Rocroi in 1643, Freiburg in 1644, Allerheim (or Nördlingen) and Lhorens in 1645, Zusmarshausen in 1647 and Lens in 1648 form a long list of French victories that bear witness to this.

This work is richly illustrated with reproductions by Ernest Meissonier, Philips Wouwerman, Ernest Crofts, Jacques Callot, Alphonse Lalauze, Alexandre Lesrel and many others, as well as numerous contemporary accounts. Format: 21.5 x 27.5 cm — 176 pages
