Historiography and contributions to the history of war

The history of the Napoleonic Wars is itself an object of historical study. Narrated and theorised by witnesses and participants from the years following the fall of the Empire and the death of Napoleon, the Napoleonic war has been studied, taught, depicted and re-enacted for two centuries, in step with the successive perceptions and appropriations of historians and military thinkers, but also of writers, painters, filmmakers and enthusiasts of historical re-enactment.

Drawing on the most recent research conducted both in France and abroad, this work, rich in 25 contributions, provides a historiographical assessment of the developments that have marked this history. It also explores, in all their diversity, the current dynamics of research that allow a renewed perspective on the Napoleonic Wars and thus a better understanding of the pivotal role of the Napoleonic moment in the transformation of the practices and representations of war.
