On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of the Reich. Since 1919 and the trauma of the Great War, the Nazis had developed a worldview whose only originality lay in its racist coherence and utopian impetus. They knew how to exploit the context of a major crisis — that of 1929 — to subjugate minds and seize power. Power was handed to them, with staggering recklessness, by the established elites, who believed that Hitler would last only a few weeks and that his followers would be "tamed".

Yet the Nazis immediately seized control of the country before leading it to destruction, ultimately reducing the entire continent to a vast charnel house. The Nazi inner world — that political imaginary steeped in hatred, anxiety and utopia — had given birth, in the space of twelve years, to an infernal world; a world that entailed the death of tens of millions of people, including the majority of the continent's Jews.
