Operation Merkur, May 1941: the Fallschirmjäger jump over Crete

Following Marita, the Balkan campaign and the German victory in mainland Greece, the island of Crete, as an RAF base, posed a serious threat to the Reich. The Ploesti oilfields were at risk from British bombers.

The decision was made: the XI. Fliegerkorps was transferred to Greece for an airborne operation to prepare the sea landing of ground troops. The Fallschirmjäger jumped over Crete on 20 May 1941, in several waves. The battle was fierce and extremely costly for the paratroopers, who lost nearly half their strength.

A costly victory for the Germans but also for the British, who lost their base and roughly as many men — along with 12,000 prisoners.

The core of this new work consists of 150 remarkable and extremely rare photographs, out of a total of more than 300 photos, 30 colour profiles and maps. A detailed account of the operations, accompanied by first-hand testimonies, will make this richly illustrated volume an essential reference on a battle that has become legendary.
