After several decades of research, drawing on the testimonies of several dozen veterans of this Division, surviving war diaries and the many unpublished documents and archives assembled, it is at last possible to reconstruct with precision the terrible engagements of the 10.SS-Panzerdivision "Frundsberg" from the Galician plains of Ukraine (Buczacz sector) to the Norman bocage.

Committed late, in the very last days of June 1944, the "Frundsberger" fought in the sectors around Hills 112 and 113 near Caen for over a month before being deployed further west, towards Vire. The rapid deterioration of the German military situation following the Mortain operation led to the strategic withdrawal of the Division, which now fought a series of rearguard actions. Barenton, Fromentel, Putanges, Trun, Saint-Lambert, Mont-Ormel — place names that tolled the death knell for the units of the "Frundsberg" barely managing to extract themselves from the Falaise Pocket.

The withdrawal turned into a general retreat for the German army, and only a third of the initial effective strength of the 10.SS-Panzerdivision "Frundsberg" was able to cross the Seine.

The wealth of previously unpublished documents, enriched by an exceptional iconography comprising over 800 photographs and documents — the majority unpublished — (period photographs, portraits, Soldbücher and archival documents, …) constitutes indispensable documentation for a better understanding of this Division's engagement in Galicia and during the fighting of the Battle of Normandy.

A reference work on one of the most celebrated Panzerdivisionen, for all specialists of German units engaged in Normandy 1944 and for enthusiasts of military history!
