With this book, Didier Lodieu revisits the sacrifice of the Jäger of the 17. Felddivision (L) committed to the fighting on the Seine front. The action begins on 23 August 1944, by which date this Army division numbered no more than 50 men following engagements along the Avre and subsequent defensive withdrawals to Évreux. Despite their heavy losses, tactical groups were organised under the command of Generalleutnant Höcker. Side by side, Jäger, Grenadiere and Waffen-SS worked to slow the lightning thrust of the XIXth US Army Corps, in order to allow their comrades — survivors of the Falaise Pocket — to fall back to the Seine and cross it. For some it was a mission of sacrifice; for others, a race against the clock. This book was produced with the assistance of more than 60 veterans and previously unpublished archival documents.

This book is the second volume of the Trilogy on the German Retreat. Volume 1: Fighting on the Seine — Volume 2: The German Retreat to the Seine — Volume 3: From the Crossing of the Seine to the Scheldt
