In the context of preparations for the Normandy landings, the American high command became aware that the 8th Air Force alone would not be sufficient to provide tactical air support on such a large scale.

The cornerstone of the operation would be air superiority: aviation would need to be capable of intervening rapidly and precisely, and of operating from airfields in France. The Americans therefore stood up an air army of the flexibility suited to any mission, the 9th Air Force. The hundreds of previously unpublished photographs drawn from the personal albums of the pilots and crews themselves, together with colour reconstructions of their flying gear, constitute a unique historical record.
