The Modern Combatant's Guide

In the wake of recent painful events, the French people seem to be discovering that their soldiers fight wars.
Yet since the end of the Algerian War (1964), France has been present on numerous external theatres of operations (Chad, Mauritania, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman… Côte d'Ivoire and Afghanistan). This guide is therefore addressed to those who have taken part in one or more military operations, on the orders of the French government, whether under French, allied or NATO command, or under UN mandate… on an external theatre of operations. Its sole aim is to provide a situational overview (as of the date of writing) of the texts applicable to military personnel — and sometimes to civilians — in the context of conflicts taking place under all the world's skies.
Those who have not taken part in OPEX operations but are beneficiaries of the Office National des Anciens Combattants et Victimes de Guerre (ONAC-VG) — having been wounded in service, for example — will find in this guide information directly relevant to military disability pensions, career transition and more.
It is also addressed to all those who, at one time or another, have worn the uniform. By this honour, they belong to the "world of combatants"; this guide will provide them with general information.
Through the breadth of its content, the reader of this guide will absorb the spirit of the Union Nationale des Combattants (UNC). An association of the combatant community, the UNC has brought together all generations since 1917 (officially since 1918). For many years it has been open to new generations, with the shared bond of having worn the uniform, whether in times of "war" or in times of "peace".
The information in this guide, necessarily fixed at the time of printing, will be updated as necessary through revisions published in La Voix du Combattant, the UNC journal, 18 rue Vézelay, 75008 PARIS.
