In May 1978, Jean-Claude Saulnier, alias Julien Soral, a young legionnaire fresh out of basic training, took part with the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment in the last major airborne operation of the French Army at Kolwezi, where he received his first wound and won his first claim to glory.

In 2010, at the height of his honors — a Knight of the Légion d'honneur, holder of the Médaille Militaire, and inducted into the restricted order of the marshals of the Foreign Legion — Adjudant-Chef Saulnier led his final campaign in Afghanistan as president of the non-commissioned officers of the 2nd REP within Task Force Altor.

Over the course of his thirty-four years in the Foreign Legion, thirty-one of which were spent with the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment, Jean-Claude Saulnier was both an actor and a witness to the remarkable technological, strategic, and human transformations that turned the Foreign Legion into a rapidly deployable intervention force perfectly suited to France's role in the world.
