The fruit of more than five years' work, the large-format book Légionnaires, portraits offers an immersive look into the world of Foreign Legionnaires from their first day of enlistment to the end of their lives at the Legion's famous retirement institution in Puyloubier. Photographer Jean-Baptiste Degez, who followed these men in France as well as in Djibouti and French Guiana, succeeded in convincing them to reveal their faces and their traditions before his lens. His gallery of intimate portraits and scenes from daily life is complemented by texts from journalist Henri Weill — a collection of anecdotes and slices of life in which the extraordinary rubs shoulders with the incredible. Together with them, we go to meet men from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas who share with us their memories — moving, funny and tragic alike.
