After the Second World War, the C-47, its military version, came to symbolise the aircraft of the Normandy landings, and from 1944 onward it flew under the French roundels.
In the Armée de l'air and the Aéronautique navale, nearly 300 "Dakota" — the nickname for the C-47 — carried out countless missions. For forty years, the "Dakota" flew our colours across the world: it is this long chapter of our military aviation history that is told in this book.
The C-47s experienced the Indochina conflict and the hell of Dien Bien Phu. They were deployed in Africa, they crisscrossed the skies of many countries. In metropolitan France, they took part in the training of Military Air Transport crews, and they also equipped the Aéronavale.
Previously unpublished testimonies bring the C-47's missions to life and revive its adventures. Withdrawn from service, many "Dakota" aircraft were transferred to other countries or to airline companies; some would be fitted with turbine engines.
