A technical history of the hundreds of Fw 190s overhauled under the Occupation at the maintenance centres of Villacoublay, Tours and Cravant before being reconditioned as NC 900s after the Liberation. But also a human story, enriched by numerous testimonies, of French, German, Spanish and Russian men and women who were drawn — willingly or by force — into this adventure.
You will discover the production of the NC 900s in the underground factory at Cravant and their operational use against a backdrop of political and ideological struggles, as well as the history of the units that flew them during the confused years of the post-war period. Among them, the famous Normandie-Niémen regiment, where these "Focke fighters" bearing French roundels flew alongside Yak-3s during a period of setbacks — between the triumphal return from the USSR and the transfer to North Africa at the end of the 1940s.
This book is based on contemporary reports and archival documents, as well as on the numerous testimonies gathered and cross-referenced over twenty years of research and sometimes surprising encounters.
480 pages illustrated with more than 870 photographs (including a complete photoscope of the last surviving NC 900 for modellers!), around twenty maps and some forty plans, plus 26 colour profiles and 5 detail profiles by Vincent Dhorne. With the participation of François IGLESIA.
