From February 1944 they were known as the FFI, Forces françaises de l'Intérieur. The question at stake was how the merger of these two very diverse and above all very different forces would unfold: this is what became known as « l'Amalgame ». The subject has been addressed many times, but it has never been fully treated, as all the intricacies it entailed were glossed over or simply passed over in silence.

Glorified by some and vilified by others, the reality of this episode is in fact highly complex. The central figure of this amalgamation is General de Lattre de Tassigny, commanding the First French Army, which would fight from Provence to Lake Constance driving the Germans from French territory. But he was not the only one; there were other original experiments that have likewise received little mention.
