The Second World War upended the lives of entire populations. Among them, countless actors and actresses. How did they live through the conflict? What choices were they forced to make? What were the consequences for their careers?

From 1939 to 1945, general mobilisation was the order of the day: in France, Bernard Blier was taken prisoner but escaped from his Stalag, Jean Gabin joined the Navy, Jean Marais enlisted in the 2nd Armoured Division; in Italy, Lino Ventura fled fascism and made his way to Paris; in Germany, Horst Tappert — the future Inspector Derrick — became an SS soldier; in the United Kingdom, Richard Burton joined the Royal Air Force. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor also led, in 1941, to the enlistment of dozens of American stars: Clark Gable, Paul Newman, Tony Curtis… In Hollywood, Bette Davis created a famous club offering entertainment to soldiers returning from missions.

For four years, while the Germans held sway over France, some continued their careers (Maurice Chevalier, Fernandel) and at times fraternised with the enemy: Danielle Darrieux boarded the "train of shame" to Berlin, while Arletty fell in love with a Nazi officer. Others chose the Resistance: Pierre Dac joined Radio Londres, Marlene Dietrich worked as a spy, and Hedy Lamarr invented a sonar…
