A young Parisian student, Bernard Dargols was on an internship in New York when war broke out in 1939. His family, who had remained in France, was threatened by the antisemitic laws of the Vichy regime. Bernard Dargols then decided to enlist in the American army, convinced that he would be more effective there in fighting the occupying forces.

Having become a GI after lengthy military training, he landed in June 1944 on Bloody Omaha Beach and served in the military intelligence unit of the Indian Head, the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division. He took part in the liberation of Normandy, Brittany and the Ardennes, before becoming a member of the CIC, the U.S. Counter Intelligence Corps, and being demobilised in 1946.
