The Fighter Squadron Ardennes holds a unique place in the order of battle of the Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace. In 2023, it celebrated its 80th anniversary. We felt it was the right moment to mark this occasion by retracing its history.

The unit was disbanded and re-established on several occasions. Only the Escadrille BR 44, attached to the squadron at a late stage, traces its origins to the Great War. It was in 1943 that the wild boars first appeared. Although the Ardennes unit is not, for chronological reasons, an F.A.F.L. unit, the majority of its personnel share that spirit.

They wrote the first pages of glory on the P-47. During Operation 700 at Suez, the wild boars flew the F-84F. The Mirage 5F never had the opportunity to distinguish itself in overseas operational theatres, but its successor, the Jaguar, did so with success. The Mirage 2000D took part in every Opex, and the Ardennes squadron's expertise is closely associated with this aircraft.
