The odyssey of a man who escaped from France through Spain

Born in 1921, the Norman Michel Cherrier plunges back into his youth: the defeat of 1940, the occupation of Caen, arrests, the demarcation line, his escape across the Pyrenees in late 1942 — at over 2,000 metres altitude — with a single goal: to join Free France.

Imprisoned for six months in Spain, he then enlisted in the French naval forces in 1943. In the United States, he embarked in May 1944 aboard the escort destroyer Le Marocain. Intense missions followed in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, including the Provence landings and Operation Goldflake.

He served aboard the cruiser Suffren in Indochina in 1946–47, then, demobilised, returned to the devastated city of Caen…

A Knight of the Légion d'honneur, the author turned 103 in early 2024. He offers a candid, precise and vivid account, from the rarely expressed viewpoint of a French sailor in the Second World War. Set against the backdrop of the harsh trials of naval service, the Giraud–de Gaulle power struggle, and the early days of the Indochina War.

A memoir accompanied by numerous personal photographs, drawings and maps.
