The remarkable work of firefighters during the bombing of Rouen at the end of the Second World War.

The role of firefighters in Rouen during the Second World War is a subject that remains largely unexplored. Historians have not yet paid significant attention to the various civil defence services, having focused instead on the bombings and the fighting — historical aspects that benefit from abundant sources. Thierry Chion presents here an unprecedented aspect of Rouen's history: men who united their efforts to assist a wounded civilian population, even under the bombs. The destruction affected 10,000 homes and claimed 1,600 victims.

In his research, the author encountered numerous difficulties, notably the lack of photographs of firefighters at work. Who, after all, thought to immortalise these remarkable men in such terrible moments? Some died in the fires, everything was burning, and many people had just lost everything. The principal iconographic sources are the propaganda services, German soldiers, and the official press services.

The book draws on the numerous testimonies taken from reports written at the time and from accounts given by firefighters still living.
