The unit served with the Northwest African Air Forces from February to December 1943, then with the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) through to the end of the war alongside the other unit featured in this volume: the 15th Air Force. The latter was activated in November 1943 to operate in the MTO (Mediterranean Theater of Operations), and its groups were based primarily from airfields in southern Italy. Their objectives were to destroy all oil refineries and aircraft manufacturing plants. This volume therefore presents all the units and aircraft operated by these two major formations whose objectives and achievements have too often been overlooked by historians of the Second World War. A chapter is devoted to the famous Tuskegee airmen, the 332nd Fighter Group of the 15th Air Force, the first and only front-line unit of American aviation composed entirely of African Americans. 128 pages
