Civil and Military Architecture is a pioneering work of the nineteenth century, one of the very first to classify manor houses, house façades and fortified castles, and to organise the history of architecture into chronological periods.

Turning the pages amid the ever-present illustrations, the reader travels through the history of France and perceives the extraordinary, monumental imprint left by the builders of the Middle Ages. Most of these buildings have long since disappeared, and yet they come back to life before our eyes for a fleeting moment.

What creative richness, what a marvellous testament to our past! The castles that lay in ruins in the author's time — entirely restored or definitively demolished today — offer a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors.

This Civil and Military Architecture forms part of a vast corpus written by Arcisse de Caumont (1801–1873). More than thirty volumes to his name and an active contribution to more than two hundred others give some idea of his prolific talents as a writer, researcher and scholar.
