In this work, Eugène Hennebert, a retired lieutenant-colonel of the Engineers, traces the history of torpedoes from antiquity — including certain forms of Greek fire — through to his own era, with the first torpedo boats and submarines.

With the aid of numerous illustrations, he describes the various models invented, the means of deploying them and the effects they produced. In the final section of this work, he examines, from both a tactical and a historical perspective, the use of this weapon in numerous naval conflicts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Eugène Hennebert was born on 19 July 1826 in Beauvais. He graduated from the École Polytechnique in 1845 and chose the Engineers as his arm of service. Upon his retirement in 1883, after a long military career, he wrote more than forty scientific and historical works, as well as numerous newspaper articles, pamphlets and notices. He died in Versailles on 4 June 1896.

This book is a reprint of the original 1884 work.
