On 23 February 1945, photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the image of six soldiers raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the tiny Japanese island of Iwo Jima. From that moment on, for journalists and the world at large, the photograph stood as proof of the United States' victory in the battle raging at the heart of the Pacific. It became a true icon — a source of inspiration and devotion for the American people. Aware of the extraordinary impact of the image, President Roosevelt ordered that the six soldiers photographed be identified and brought back to the United States. He wished to entrust them with a new mission of crucial importance to the continuation of the war: to help the American government, on the brink of bankruptcy, raise several billion dollars in war bonds. Yet on the island of Iwo Jima, no one yet knew of the wave of emotion the photograph had stirred. The Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most terrible of the Second World War, had in fact only just begun. It would last more than a month longer, during which over 80,000 Marines would face — and annihilate — 20,000 Japanese defenders at a cost in casualties previously unimaginable.
