June 1940: France, defeated by the German army, capitulates. Traumatised by the scale of the defeat, the majority of the French rally to the new government headed by Marshal Pétain. Yet a handful of men refuse to give up. From this spirit of resistance a movement is born — the Free French — and one leader emerges: Charles de Gaulle. The first phase of the reconquest begins at the other end of the world from metropolitan France, in Central Africa, the new operational and strategic base of the Free French… It is in these territories that the first volunteers accomplish, with meagre resources and in a hostile environment, an extraordinary epic… One made possible only by an exceptional commander: Leclerc. Five years of work were required to reconstruct, precisely and from unpublished sources, this "geste" of the first knights of Free France. This work sheds new light on a pivotal period of our history and pays tribute to the men of Leclerc — those "fighters of the impossible".
