The pea coat is the most classic warm sailor's garment. It was already worn in the time of Napoleon.

The USN mod. 38 pea coat by Pike Brothers, offered by Forties-Factory.com, is a double-breasted jacket with an "Ulster" collar. It is recognizable by its wide lapels, which can be worn open or turned up, providing protection and warmth for the neck. It features the traditional double row of three anchor buttons. It is slightly flared at the hips. This Pike Brothers model incorporates all the traditional elements of the American pea coat. Finally, it is woven, as in the original, from 100% wool at a weight of 1,000 g/m² (34 oz).

It is said to have been created in the 18th century by the Dutch navy, hence its name. The term pea coat, or " pije coat " in Dutch, describes a coat made of sturdy wool fabric. Initially, it was made by the sailors themselves, who waterproofed them by applying a primer — composed of tar, tallow and turpentine. The British and French navies adopted this double-breasted jacket for themselves and adapted it to the needs of their officers.

The pea coat proved a great success and was in turn adopted by the US Navy. The coat was worn by the " reefers " who climbed the rigging of sailing ships. This hardwearing garment is still used in the navy today, as it effectively protects against wind, cold and driving rain. At sea, it has proven its worth — and will continue to do so in the future. Those who wear it stay warm even in the most demanding weather conditions.
