Easily recognisable by its pointed nose and discreet silhouette, the VBL is the smallest combat vehicle in the French Army. With its 4-tonne weight and light armament, the VBL does not, at first glance, appear likely to impress the enemy.

Yet its arrival on the battlefield is never inconsequential. Whether attached to an armoured unit or engaged in a reconnaissance mission, the VBL's vocation is to direct fire (from more powerful armoured vehicles) or call down lightning (from artillery and aviation). With thirty years of overseas operations to its name, the VBL has demonstrated that it is an indispensable element of the manoeuvre.

Its tactical capabilities also attracted considerable interest from numerous foreign armies, and over 700 VBLs have been sold for export. Today, the VBL is beginning a new chapter in service, through the upgrade programme initiated in 2015, and should remain, for some years yet, one of the preferred mounts of close-combat units.
