"I could take out that bastard with my eyes closed", proposed the British military attaché in Berlin, who laid out his plan of action to his superiors in 1939.

Of the 42 documented assassination attempts on Hitler, the majority were carried out by the German resistance, which recognized early on Hitler's appetite for war. Ordinary citizens, workers, students, and conspiracies of generals all devised plots — and nearly all met the same fate: beheaded, hanged from a meat hook, or shot.

The major powers — the USSR, Poland, and Great Britain — all drew up their own plans. In secret archives recently declassified by the British, every detail of Hitler's habits was recorded: his residences, his walking hours, his preferred drinks such as milky tea or beer… And every possible means of assassination was considered: poisoning, explosion, sniper…

Thugs and even women offered their services. When Hitler did not cut short one of his speeches or cancel one of his visits, the weather and unforeseen circumstances conspired to shield the dictator from certain death.
